Definitely do not take your photos in open sunlight, it will cause you to squint and will be very contrasty and not print well. Go to

a park or beach and use natural props like trees and rocks and stay in the shade and use fill flash to get good lighting on your face and in your eyes. Good Luck

If you take a good, quality photograph, you don'e NEED any kind of Photoshop or any other application to make it look good.

I would NOTrecommend taking the shot outside, in the sun. For portraits, the lighting tends to be a little harsh. If you don't have a good indoor lighting set up, you can acheive a very nice lighting effect by sitting outside, IN THE SHADE of a porch or other object, with bright sunlight "spilling over" onto the subject. It does not provide the best contrast, but your portrait shouldn't be with a lot of contrast.

The other issue is that the other students may be wearing something specific, like a robe or gown. You may want to find out what their photographer will be having them wear. You don't want your picture to be THAT different than every one else's.
If you do it outside, try using the shade under a tree. This'll help diffuse the light. And will give you that nice contrast between skin tones and green foliage.
